I got to fly out to Oregon for my Big City Mountaineers backpacking trip with four teens from Mount Hood Community College's Project YESS, a GED/work experience program. Here's our trip leader Jack explaining a few things to the guys before the trip. Note New Hampton High School alumni Drew Sauser to the far right.

Mom’s 14er September 30, 2009

You only turn 59 once, and after that, you just keep telling people you're 59. Mom's birthday is Oct. 3rd, so on Sept. 11, we thought we'd attempt her first Colorado 14er, Quandary Peak. Here's a shot from the Safeway parking lot in Frisco at 5:50 a.m. Kathy figured one donut would be enough breakfast for the hike.

Climbing, July 31-Aug. 23 September 3, 2009

We took Syd, our new executive director, out for a day of "team building," or something like that, on July 31. In our office, that means a multi-pitch rock climb, and free rappel at the end. Mitsu (left) and I came up with this idea, and after Syd said he'd go, I started asking Mitsu things like, "Has Syd rappelled before? When do you think the last time he rappelled was?" Brie, our staffing manager, and her BF, Mike, came along.
